A 'Beacon'
College in the East of England has recently selected
Text-Connect™ to provide a '2 way' text
messaging service to encourage students and parents
to notify the college of non attendance with a text
message. |

Students
and parents find a text message quick and easy to send,
and by including the reason for absence and their student
ID number, their message & absence can easily be
reconciled with the student's record held by the college.
Messages arrive with the college electronically, initially
as an email version of the original message which can
also be accessed 'online'
in the colleges 'Inbox'. |
| Once a notification
has reached the colleges 'Inbox' an automatic 'Thank
you' message is generated back to the Student assuring
them that their message has been received. |
| Absence
notification SMS messages from students are easily exported
to spreadsheet format by the college management where
statistics on the reasons for student absence are analysed.
Student absences range from Sickness, to doctor and
dentist appointments, Interviews and lack of transport.
This enables the fast identification of trends which
the college can react to and address. |
| Receiving
absence notifications by SMS text message also drastically
reduces telephone traffic for the College reception
at a very busy time of day, and so enabling the College
reception staff to provide a better service to other
callers. |
| Because
there is a permanent record of each absence message,
the scope for disagreements later is also reduced. |
| Future developments
are expected to include the automatic processing of
incoming student absence messages, using the Text-Connect™
Application
Programming Interface and web forwarding features.
Text messages will be auto forwarded
to a web server where they will be processed, automatically
updating the students record with the reason for the
absence, and informing the relevant lecturers by email.
A customised text reply back to the student can also
be sent, enabling different profiles of absenteeism
to be handled as appropriate. |

use Text-Connect™ is minimal due to the
online help and intuitive Software design.
